Burgers? Check. Mince? Check. Chicken? Check. Staphylococcus? WHAT? Your family barbeque has an unexpected and most unwelcome visitor in the form of a superbug.
Meat and poultry is contaminated by dangerous bacteria, including superbugs that are antibiotic resistant. Recent nationwide studies by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), situated in Flagstaff, Arizona, have determined that a staggering 47% of the tested samples were contaminated, of which 52% contained superbugs. Said samples were from different sources, brands and stores primarily located in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale and Flagstaff areas, which is extremely worrying.
Further testing showed that the root cause may be found in the animals'food, which raises questions about how antibiotics are widely used in animal-food production. This has been the source of vigorous debate within the industry and among political divides. There have also been a number of news stories relating to this issue. The jury is still out. Now since I will be flying on some cheap flights over the next few months, I can only hope they don’t serve any of those meats.
The infected animals are reared in heavily populated arms where they’re dosed with small quantities of antibiotics. This unfortunately creates the perfect breeding ground for the drug resistant bacteria which will then pass from animal to human.
The World Health Organization recognizes the connection between the use of antibiotics in livestock and the ever resistant superbugs. If that’s the case, why have these industrial farms been permitted to continue this lethal practice when it has been banned in Europe except when directly treating illness?
