Proud To Be Black, Glad to Be Gay.
Here are a few observations:
· Some people have relationships with others of the same sex.
· Not everyone has got the same colour skin.
· It is the twenty-first century.
These are all facts. You may not be happy about some of them but you cannot do anything to change them.
Xenophobia is a terrible disease that can take on many different guises. One of these is called ‘homophobia’. Many homophobes have got hidden issues which cause them to be hostile towards people who make them feel ‘threatened’.
As far as I can see, this latest attack on a gay man has occurred because of homophobia. I am glad that the Police have recognised this but that does not help this poor man or his family. The ‘people’ behind this attack make me feel sick to the stomach.
I am not homosexual but I do not have any problem with anyone who is; I have also had some very good gay friends over the years. Why can’t everyone ‘live and let live’? What exactly is the big problem here?
This attack was incredibly cowardly. The authorities estimate that it was carried out by thirteen individuals. Imagine that, thirteen people attacking you at the same time. The poor guy must have been absolutely terrified.
So, when these animals are finally rounded up what is going to be their punishment? I have an awful feeling that whatever it is will not come anywhere close to fitting the crime. That, unfortunately, is the way that it seems to go in Britain. But this attack raises other questions…
Why is it that people think it is acceptable to behave like this? How long are things like this going to keep happening?
Modern society teaches us to accept one another no matter what our sexual orientation. Some of the attackers who took part in this horrific assault are thought to be as young as fifteen years old. If that is true then something is very wrong here. This is a new century with (thank God) new attitudes. If these things are not being learnt by our young people then we are failing as a society.
